Struggling to lose weight on yet another sub zero South Dakota February day?

If that's the case, here's something new to try. Forget the diet, and all the calorie counting that goes with it. Don't bother with the cardio, the circuit training or any other form of exercise you've been employing to help melt the weight off, instead just give shivering a try.

And on a day like today, that shouldn't be too hard.

According to a new study out of the University of Sydney in Australia, shivering for 10 to 15 minutes burns as many calories as one hour of moderate exercise. How crazy is that?

Researchers found that being cold and working out both produce something in your body called "brown fat," which evidently is a good kind of fat that burns calories.

This is just one of the latest studies conducted on the connection between being cold and losing weight. There was another study that came out a few weeks ago from the Netherlands which also found that working in the cold can raise your metabolism.

Between you and me, I think I'll continue to settle for the confines of a nice warm gym in my on-going quest to battle the bulge. But hey, maybe you might want to give shivering a try?

I'm sure your neighbors won't think anything is strange, when you stand out in your front yard in sub zero temps wearing gym clothes shivering your you know what off for 10-15 minutes each day.

One thing is for sure, we're certainly living in the right part of the country to give this a shot. And the way things seem to be going this winter, you'll probably get another 2-3 months of a great shivering weather.

Who knows how much weight you might be able to shiver off by then?
