If you drive a large vehicle and need to park on Phillips Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls, you'll want to be mindful of a proposed city ordinance regarding parking that could result in a fine in the future.

Dakota News Now is reporting that Sioux Falls City Councilors on Tuesday, (November 12) detailed a road map for a proposed ordinance that could change parking on Phillips Avenue in the not-to-distant future.

If approved the ordinance would require vehicles parking between 9th and 13 streets to leave at least 10 feet of clearance out onto the road.

That means if you drive a larger truck or van whose length reaches close to 20 feet, there's a very good chance you will need to park on a side street or ramp in that area to comply with the new proposed law.

The city is attempting to cut down on the number of larger vehicles that stick way out in traffic on Phillips Avenue. All too often motorists in that vicinity of downtown need to swerve around larger vehicles sticking out in the road. In an attempt to dodge these larger vehicles, drivers are often required to cross the center line which obviously doesn't make for the safest driving conditions.

According to Dakota News Now, the city of Sioux Falls has crafted this proposed ordinance after similar laws on the books in cities like Omaha and Rapid City.

If the ordinance is approved, motorists in violation would receive a $15 fine that has the potential to increase with any late fees that are incurred.

Drivers should also know the city plans to enforce the ordinance 24/7, not just when the parking meters are active.

If approved, the city plans to paint additional lines on the street to show how far out vehicles stick out. Extra signage in the Phillips Avenue area will also be posted.

The city council plans to vote on the proposed ordinance in the coming weeks. If passed, it would go into effect on May, 1 of 2025.
