If you drive a larger vehicle and spend any significant time downtown, you will need to get up to speed on a new city ordinance that will go into effect next year.

The Sioux Falls City Council passed a new parking ordinance on Tuesday, (December 4) that will require motorists driving larger trucks and vans to leave at least 10 feet of clearance onto the road between 9th and 13th Street on Phillips Avenue.

Dakota News Now reports that larger vehicles like trucks and vans will now need to park on side streets if the length of their vehicle reaches close to 20 feet.

This new parking law isn't something that is unique to just Sioux Falls, several other Midwest cities are doing similar things, including South Dakota's second-largest city, Rapid City.

According to Dakota News Now, the new ordinance passed by a 7 to 1 vote on Tuesday night.

Motorists along Phillips Avenue in downtown will have a little time to get acclimated to the new ordinance before it kicks in.

Authorities will begin to enforce the new city ordinance starting in May of 2025.
