New Sioux Falls Aquatic Center Construction Officially Begins
A major upgrade is underway for west-side recreation as city officials and community leaders gathered to mark the start of construction of Sioux Falls newest Aquatic Center.
The new Kuehn Park Aquatic Center project will replace the existing Kuehn Park pool, which has served residents for more than 40 years.
Once completed, the new facility will nearly double the pool’s capacity to around 700 visitors, making it the largest outdoor aquatic center in Sioux Falls.
City leaders say the development reflects years of planning and feedback from residents who have consistently expressed a desire for expanded recreational amenities in their neighborhoods.
The aquatic center will be built on the east side of Kuehn Park, near Valley View Road and Oscar Howe Elementary School.
Plans include a variety of features designed for all ages, such as a fitness pool for lap swimming, diving boards, a lazy river, and a zero-depth entry activity pool.
Additional attractions will include water slides, interactive spray elements, crossing features, and a rock climbing wall.
The $15.4 million project is part of a broader initiative to modernize Sioux Falls’ aging pool infrastructure.
Planning began in 2020 following a parks system study that identified the need to replace older facilities across the city.
Construction is expected to be completed by next summer. In the meantime, the current Kuehn Park pool will remain open for the regular swim season, though some park areas and trails will be closed during construction.
