Dakota News Now is reporting that a new chapter in Catholic education is about to begin in Sioux Falls. St. Joseph Classical, a Chesterton Academy, will open its doors to its very first class of students in the fall of 2026.

The school will be located on the campus of the Cathedral of St. Joseph and will become South Dakota’s first Catholic classical high school.

St. Joseph Classical is part of the Chesterton School Network, which includes nearly 70 schools around the world. Each school follows a Catholic curriculum inspired by the English writer G.K. Chesterton.

The classical style of education focuses on reading great works of literature, studying history and philosophy, and encouraging thoughtful discussion — all with a strong foundation in faith and reason.

The new high school will share a building with St. Joseph Academy, a Catholic Pre K through 8th grade hybrid school that opened in 2024. School leaders are currently searching for a Headmaster to help shape the school’s opening year.

Applications for ninth-grade students for the 2026–27 school year will open on December 1, 2025, and will be accepted on a rolling basis. Parents and families can learn more at information sessions on November 13 and 18 at 6:30 p.m. at 523 N. Duluth Avenue.

South Dakota has produced its share of famous people over the years. Actors like January Jones and Catherine Bach. Media personalities like Bob Barker and Tom Brokaw. Athletes like Brock Lesnar and Chad Greenway. And don't forget Laura Ingalls Wilder.

But, I want to talk about scientists. The super scientists that South Dakota has produced. Here are four that were born in South Dakota. Their work was important to nuclear physics, computer science, and agriculture; and affects us to this day.
