A major change is coming to one of Sioux Falls’ most recognizable landmarks, and once the change is complete, it’s set to reshape the look and feel of downtown.

The U.S. Bank building, a defining feature of the Sioux Falls skyline since 1965, is about to undergo a dramatic transformation. According to Dakota News Now, most of the iconic tower will be converted into an AC by Marriott hotel over the next year or so.

The AC by Marriott brand, part of Marriott International, is known for its upscale, boutique style with a distinctly European flair. The hotels feature modern, minimalist design, sleek and comfortable rooms equipped with intuitive technology, and carefully curated art and amenities.

When the Sioux Falls location is complete, guests can expect a library, fitness center, and game area, along with more than 100 guest rooms. Plans also include a restaurant and lounge on the top floor, offering what will likely become the best view in the city.

If you’re wondering about the downtown U.S. Bank branch currently located in the building, don’t worry, it’s not going anywhere.

The bank will maintain a branch on the first floor of the new hotel complex.

Dakota News Now reports that right now, the project is still in the permitting phase. Once approved, construction is expected to take about 18 months, with a grand opening planned for 2027.

And what about the building’s most famous feature, the beloved weather ball perched high atop the building?

Its fate is still up in the air (no pun intended). Rumor has it that it may be preserved and incorporated into the new design, although nothing is confirmed.

Here’s hoping that’s true. After all, many old school Sioux Falls residents still remember using that glowing orb for their daily forecast. And if it were still shining today, it’d probably be flashing white, meaning colder weather is in sight, for like the next four to five months!

It's really interesting using Google Streetview to compare the changes from the earliest pictures to the latest.

For Sioux Falls, the earliest views are from 2008 and the latest from early 2022.

Some of the looks aren't the clearest, but it still gives a real good look at how dynamic the east side of Sioux Falls is.
