New Iowa Deer Hunting Regulations Coming For 2026-27 Season

Iowa deer hunters will see some major changes when the 2026-2027 hunting season gets underway.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has made a significant structural change, dividing the state into two resident deer hunting zones: Zone A and Zone B.

The new system is designed in part to help deer populations recover in northwest Iowa.

Hunters will need to pay close attention to which zone they are hunting in and the regulations that apply there.

Another important change involves purchasing licenses.

Iowa deer hunting license sales began on August 15.

Hunters planning ahead should also know that online license sales will now end two weeks before the opening of the applicable hunting seasons.

Other Notable Statewide Changes:

• Public land tree stands: Must feature a visible metal tag with the owner's DNR customer ID number.
• Trapping tags: Identification can now use the trapper's name/address or their DNR customer ID number.
• Deadheads: A digital reporting option is available online for buck "deadheads" found between February 1 and July 31.
