One herb can keep mosquitos away from you for 3 hours.
The Patchouli compound showed results comparable to DEET in early laboratory tests.
It’s mosquito season, and many people spend a bunch of money trying to keep the pests from biting and possibly transmitting disease to them.
It turns out that all you need is Patchouli essential oil mixed into skin cream.
Patchouli is a bushy, aromatic perennial herb from the mint family, native to tropical Asia and renowned for its intense, earthy, and musky essential oil.
Patchouli is now primarily used in perfumes, cosmetics, and incense.
Scientists whipped up some of the Patchouli cream and it kept mosquitoes from landing or biting for a full three hours in a laboratory test.
Mosquitoes find their human targets largely through smell and the patchouli concoction blocks their ability to hone in on the next victim.
The cream is in its early stages, so it’s not available for sale yet.
