How does that Glen Frey record go, "The Heat is On!"

I think Glen might of had the Sioux Empire in mind when he sang that song back in the 80s, because the heat is DEFINITELY gonna be ON in the Sioux Falls area over the next few days.

The gang inside the First Alert Weather Center over at Dakota News Now is saying our temps will be hovering in the upper 90s to low 100s through Sunday. With heat index values as high as 105 at times. Do your best to stay cool, and be careful out there.

With Ma Nature cranking up her furnace for the next few days, thus begins the great debate: Is it safe to mow your yard?

If your yard is starting to resemble a Central American jungle like mine, I'm guessing you'd probably like to fire up the old Lawn Boy and give your blades of grass a nice manicure.

But, as Cousin Eddie from the motion picture "Christmas Vacation" would say, "Better take a rain check on that, Art!"

Experts on lawn care highly recommend that you refrain from mowing the yard during multiple days of extreme heat, like the ones we're about to see here in the Sioux Empire through Sunday.

The folks with Organic Lawns by Lunseth recommend keeping your Snapper in the shed when temperatures are going to exceed 80°F for several days in a row.

During summer heat waves, where temps skyrocket into the 90s and even the 100s for longer than 2 days,  it’s recommended that you DO NOT mow your lawn.

When is the best time of the day to mow your yard in hot weather?

Those in the know say you should attempt to tackle your lawn projects during the evening hours, after the heat of the day has passed. Ideally, the temperatures should be between 40°F and 80°F.

Knowing this, you might consider cutting Bart, your obnoxious neighbor, a little slack the next time he fires up his Toro close to 10 PM; he's just trying to be kind to his cool-season grass.

And yes,  I know this early summer heatwave kinda sucks, but look at this way, Mother Nature just gave you a free weekend pass from yard work.

You can tell your significant other, but honey, I can't mow this weekend, it's too damn hot! I'm just thinking of what's best for our grass. Trust me!

Just remember, if you try and use that excuse again next week when the temperatures return to the upper 70s again, I'm thinking your ass will probably be grass!

So, enjoy this heat while it lasts.

Stay cool, everyone!

10 Things You Should Never Do in South Dakota

Go anywhere in the U.S. and you'll find traditions and customs that only exist in that part of the country. South Dakota is no different, and there are definitely some "do's and don'ts" when it comes to living here.

Be careful trying any of these things in the Mount Rushmore State.
