A Minnesota senior living resident is raising her glass, and her voice, in support of a proposed bill that would allow assisted living facilities to serve alcohol to residents and their guests.

Anita LeBrun recently captured widespread attention after delivering a heartfelt testimony before a Minnesota House committee on March 17.

The legislation, informally dubbed the “Grandparents’ Happy Hour” bill, aims to give group homes the option to offer alcoholic beverages in a social setting.

During her remarks, LeBrun emphasized that aging shouldn’t mean giving up simple pleasures.

She told lawmakers that residents in assisted living communities deserve the same freedoms as anyone else, including the ability to enjoy a drink with friends. “Just because we are older and live in assisted living doesn’t mean that we should have fewer freedoms,” she said, adding that happy hour is something she and her peers genuinely enjoy.

Her testimony quickly resonated with others. A video clip shared by a Minneapolis news outlet gained traction on social media, drawing nearly one million views on TikTok.

Another clip posted on Instagram also attracted major engagement, with over 100,000 likes.

The viral moment has sparked broader conversations about the quality of life in senior care settings.

Supporters of the bill argue that allowing responsible alcohol service could enhance social connection and personal autonomy for residents.
