It might be the closest thing to a full-blown major concert you'll see for the rest of 2020, and you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own vehicle.

Metallica has announced plans to record a new and socially distanced concert that will be broadcast at drive-in movie theaters across North America on August 29, and a pair of those showings will be within an easy drive from Sioux Falls.

Both the Verne Drive-In in Luverne and Tyson Events Center in Sioux City will host screenings of the event. Tickets are $115 per vehicle (limit six people) and go on sale August 14. Members of Metallica's Fifth Member Fan Club can get access to a special pre-sale two days earlier.

Each ticket will also come with four sets of download codes for an MP3 version of their upcoming live album S&M2. The September 2019 shows featured the band's second collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony.

If you want to stay in South Dakota to catch the concert, you'll need to make sure you top off the tank. The closest show to Sioux Falls is 175 miles away at the Pheasant City Drive-In in Redfield.

There are three other South Dakota venues showing the concert:

  • Hilltop Drive-In, Gregory
  • Roy's Black Hills Drive-In, Hermosa
  • Winner Drive-In, Winner

All venues will be following all CDC guidelines in effect during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, the band posted a brief video of themselves rehearsing in the same room. It was the first time they'd played together in person since the second S&M2 show, which took place September 8, 2019.
