Business has been booming at the Levitt at the Falls this summer.

So far, attendance this year has been around 113,500 people; those numbers are on pace to push nearly 120,000 people by the end of the final weekend.

But as this record-setting season winds down, even bigger things are on the horizon. According to Pigeon 605, Levitt at the Falls is preparing to break ground on a transformative expansion project that will give the venue a fresh new look and year-round versatility.

What's planned?

Thanks to a successful $5.8 million donor campaign, the Levitt will soon grow by an additional 6,000 square feet of interior space. This new construction will make the venue far more flexible, allowing it to host performances, events, and programs even during South Dakota’s famously unpredictable off-season weather.

So many generous gifts have helped to make this happen from people like Dick and Kathy Sweetman, John and Jeanelle Lust, T. Denny Sanford, and countless others.

All these donations are making it possible to add things like the Sweetman Atrium on the west side of the Levitt, along with the creation of the T. Denny Sanford Hospitality Center, which will feature three artist dressing rooms with restrooms, an expanded green room with a kitchen, ground-level storage, and a media studio for video production.

As Pigeon 605 reports, once completed, the expansion will be a game-changer for performers and staff alike. For the first time, all behind-the-scenes operations will be brought under one roof, simplifying production and elevating the overall experience for both artists and audiences.

This new expansion is also going to allow the Levitt at the Falls to think differently about how it offers its programming in the off-season when the weather here in the Sioux Empire isn't overly cooperative.

The newly designed interior space will allow Levitt to expand its programming into the off-season. Plans include a flexible, black box-style venue that can accommodate approximately 250 guests, or up to 500 in an indoor-outdoor configuration—perfect for more intimate shows and community events throughout the year.

When will it be Ready?

Their goal is to have the dressing rooms and green rooms finished by May 15, 2026, so that they'll be ready to go for the start of next season. Then, plan to wrap up the west side and public programming space throughout next summer.

One thing is clear: this new expansion will definitely help to extend the entertainment season at the Levitt and help to further deepen the community’s connection and appreciation for the arts.
