Sioux Falls Jacobson Plaza Skate Ribbon Making Big Switch
Thousands of ice skaters enjoyed the Sioux Falls Jacobson Plaza Skate Park for it’s first season, but now it’s time to switch it over.
Due to warm temperatures and changing ice conditions, the City of Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department is transitioning the Jacobson Plaza skate ribbon for the spring and summer season.

Beginning Tuesday, March 3, the skate ribbon will be temporarily closed while staff converts the surface from ice back to concrete.
Weather permitting, the ribbon is expected to reopen for roller and inline skating on Friday, March 6.
Sioux Falls Recreation Manager, Jackie Nelson, said: "Thank you, Sioux Falls, for making our first ice season at Jacobson Plaza such a success. Since opening on Nov. 21, 2025, the ice ribbon has welcomed nearly 23,000 skaters...an incredible milestone for our team. We're thrilled with the community's response and hope everyone enjoyed the experience as much as we did."
The 14,000-square-foot skate ribbon was built for year-round use, featuring a concrete surface for warm-weather recreation and a refrigeration system that converts the ribbon to ice each winter.
Parks Operations Manager Josh Johnson noted the system performed efficiently despite a warmer-than-average season, calling the first year a valuable opportunity to learn and grow.
Once reopened, supervised skating hours will be:
• Mon–Thu: 4–8 p.m.
• Fri: 4–10 p.m.
• Sat: 11 a.m.–10 p.m.
• Sun: 11 a.m.–8 p.m.
Admission is free, and skate rentals are available for $3. For the latest on hours, rentals, and programming, visit siouxfalls.gov.
