USD was blown out at home by UNI on Senior Day 58-14 but it wasn't all doom and gloom for the football program.

After the loss to UNI, University of South Dakota Athletic Director David Herbster not only game USD head coach Bob Nielson a vote of confidence about his future, but eluded to a contract extension as well.

"Our team experienced adversity and challenges beyond the toughest schedule in the country. Through injuries and other adjustments that put us at a disadvantage all year long. Was this the season we hoped for? Of course not, and I think Bob (Nielson) would be the first to tell you this is not what we want Coyote football to be. What Bob has done extremely well is compile an incredible group of young men who represent themselves, their families, their communities and this University extremely well. I've always believed that there's more to coaching that what you see on a scoreboard."

He went on to discuss the future of the program with Coach Bob Nielson leading the way.

"We all believe in Bob and his ability to lead our team. That's me, our president, this department, and this University. He's won two national championships in his career, and we have three playoff appearances in the last 35 years here at USD and Bob is responsible for two of those. With our support, we know we can achieve our goals of winning championships. That said, Bob will remain the head coach at the University of South Dakota for the foreseeable future and we will be extending his contract."

Since being at USD, Nielson has led the program in a different direction than where it was when he arrived and that has included two playoff appearances.

This season aside, USD has found new hope within their football program and it will be interesting to see where it goes moving forward.
