It seems like no matter where you look these days there are new apartment complexes popping up all over.

That's certainly the case in Sioux Falls where nearly 2,000 new units were added in 2021 and more than 3,000 so far in 2022.

But South Dakota's largest city is hardly alone.

24/7 Wall Street looked at the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau and found that because of record demand for housing, a lot of cities are opting for more and more apartments to try and keep up with demand.

But there's still a lot of work to be done.

The latest numbers show that the country needs 3.8 million new residences to keep up with demand.

The biggest jump in apartment construction in the Tri-State area is in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and neighboring Omaha, Nebraska.

New building permits for apartments are up more than ten percent since 2016. That's the 19th-highest rate in America.

Minnesota's Twin Cities are right behind.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul/Bloomington market has seen a 10.2 percent jump in apartment construction permits in the last six years. That's the 20th-highest rate in America.

Just a few spots down on the list is the South Dakota city with the biggest new apartment boom, but it's not Sioux Falls.

Rapid City is at number 23 with a 9.7 percent increase in new apartment constriction since 2016.
