Why Everyone Seems to Be Picking Up Pickleball

Not long ago, pickleball was something you might stumble across at a community center. Today, it's one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in the country, and courts across South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa are busier than ever.

From teenagers to retirees, more people are grabbing a paddle and giving the game a try. So what's behind pickleball's sudden popularity?

It's Easy to Learn

One of pickleball's biggest advantages is that you don't have to be an athlete to enjoy it.

The rules are simple, the court is smaller than a tennis court, and most beginners can score points within just a few minutes. That makes it less intimidating than many other sports and a great activity for families or groups of friends. You don't need years of experience to have fun.

It's More Social Than You Think

Pickleball has become as much about meeting people as it is about keeping score. Many communities host open play nights where players rotate in and out of games, making it easy to meet new people without having to organize a full team. It's one of the few sports where you'll often see players of different ages sharing the same court. That welcoming atmosphere is a big reason so many people stick with it.

Courts Are Popping Up Everywhere

Cities across the Midwest have taken notice of the growing demand. Parks departments have added new pickleball courts, converted old tennis courts, and expanded recreation programs to accommodate the sport's rapid growth. It's becoming easier than ever to find a place to play, whether you're in a larger city or a smaller town.

One thing that is nice about Pickleball is you can play it either inside or outside making it a year round sport. According to Pickleheads, there are at least 17 Pickleball courts in Sioux Falls, some are free to use and others require a membership.

Ready to Give It a Shot?

If you've been curious about pickleball but haven't picked up a paddle yet, this summer might be the perfect time. Worst-case scenario, you discover it's not for you. Best-case scenario, you find a new hobby, get some exercise, and make a few new friends along the way.

Just be warned: almost everyone who starts playing says the same thing.

"I'll just play one game."

Then somehow it's three hours later, and you're already shopping for your own paddle.

Check out the Sioux Falls Area Pickleball Club for details on how to get involved.
