I’m Obsessed With Ed Sheeran’s New Album And You Should Be Too

So, I know I might be a little bias because Ed Sheeran and I are such good friends. I mean we did go to a movie together, but that is a story for another time.

Ed's new album Divide came out March 3 and is just sooooooo good. I don't have adequate words to describe why, but I'm going to try.

I'm a couple weeks late to the party, but my brother had bought the CD and told me that it was good, and even though I don't always trust his opinion, I checked out the album on a free streaming service and after one full listen I had to buy it! I needed it to be mine!

And then, as I do with things I really like, I went a little crazy researching the songs and reading interviews with Ed about the album.

In a Today Show interview, Ed said that the album name Divide was in part because he wanted each song to stand on its own and be separate from each other. No real cohesiveness here. Which was evident when he released "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill" on the same day. Two totally different songs. Both great in their own way.

It's hard to pick a favorite from this album, but my favorites are probably "Galway Girl", "Perfect", "Supermarket Flowers", "New Man" and "Nancy Mulligan."

Ok, so I know thats a lot of favorites, but they are all so different and let me try to tell you why.

"Galway Girl" is up tempo and is a song about a night of drinking and music with a girl in an Irish band. I have a few Irish friends and when I told them about "Galway Girl" they thought it was a cover of a traditional Irish folk song. It's not, but it's still awesome. This song is perfect for St. Patrick's Day. Plus, Ed had a real life traditional Irish band, Beoga, record the song with him. It's pop, folk, celtic, and a little bit rap in a weird way.

"Perfect" is the next big wedding song! I tweeted after listening to the song that it is better than "Thinking Out Loud" and Ed actually said in an interview with MusicChoice:

I think the song “Perfect” is actually better than “Thinking Out Loud.” I think there was always a scare that “Thinking Out Loud” would define me and define my career. So I, I wrote a lot of songs trying to beat it and now I think, I think I have beaten it.

Now, "New Man" is Ed Sheeran at his spiteful best. He shows his sappy, happy, lovey dovey side and then "New Man" comes along. Obviously, it's about his ex's new boyfriend and Ed doesn't think too highly of him. I know sassy isn't usually a word used to describe guys, but the song is sassy. It's the best word I can think of it to describe it.

"Nancy Mulligan" is a song toward the end of the album. This song again has a folky feel to it, a little bit like a jig. And in my research, I found that the inspiration for this song are Ed's grandparents and their love story. It's a beautiful song that tells a story. I love when a song is more than just catchy words, but an actual story.
