For the next week and a half, the heroes that make up the Sioux Falls Fire and Police Departments are busy looking for local heroes here in the Sioux Empire that are willing to donate blood to help increase community blood supplies.

KSFY TV is reporting, the Heroes Behind the Badges Blood Drive got underway today. The annual blood drive that ensures the community has the blood supply needed to treat patients over the holiday season has been going strong for 22 years now.

The blood drive is actually a friendly competition between the two departments.

Donors, serving as local heroes can give blood from now through Friday (January 5) at either the Sanford Medical Center or Avera McKennan Hospital.

At the time of their donation, people designate which department they want to sponsor.

According to KSFY TV, each department has chosen a charity that will benefit as a result of the competition. Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue has picked the Children’s Home Society, while the Sioux Falls Police Department has chosen Special Olympics of South Dakota.

The department that ends up with the most blood donations at the end of the competition will write a $700 check to the charity of their choice. The second-place winner will make a $300.00 donation to their chosen charity.

KSFY TV reports that every donor must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health.

Donors don't go away empty handed, each person that gives blood receives a free T-shirt and a $5.00 gift certificate to the Sioux Falls Texas Roadhouse.
