As we gather together with family and friends for this long holiday weekend, I'm reminded of those who don't have the luxury of a warm place to stay, a hot meal to nourish them, or even a kind word to comfort them.

It is some of those very people who benefit from the work done by the Helpline Center. Their mission is to connect persons in need with volunteers and services who can help, and in doing so change the community for the better.

Here are a few opportunities for you to assist others and enrich your own life:

  • Bright Start Christmas Party - Volunteers are needed to help with this fun event for children on Wednesday, December 5, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM. You'll help to serve the provided meal, assist with games and help while the kids have their pictures taken with Santa.
  • Sioux Falls Cares - Volunteers are needed to help deliver gifts on Wednesday, December 4 and Thursday, December 5. You'll be delivering boxes containing food, toys, and clothing for families in need. You can make up to 4 deliveries per night if you choose. A minimum of 2 people is needed for each delivery.
  • Sioux Falls Humane Society - Crafters and bakers are needed who would like to donate items for the annual "Tinsel & Tails" fundraiser, coming up on December 7, at the Sioux Falls Humane Society. Items must be donated before that Saturday.
