Harrisburg Middle School Students Flying to D.C. To Witness Trump’s Inauguration

Next week, several Harrisburg middle school students will embark on a cross-country field trip that they will never forget.

60 students, together with their history teacher, 6 adult chaperones, and several parents of students are all flying out to Washington D.C. on Wednesday, (January 18) to witness President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Get this, that Harrisburg history teacher, just happens to be, my sister, Tamara Huffman.

For the past 17 years, my sister has been taking her students on these cross-country history field trips to the east coast. In addition to D.C., previous students from Harrisburg north middle school have taken tours in places like; Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Lexington to name a few.

This year, thanks to South Dakota Senator John Thune, they will receive tickets to a presidential inauguration on Friday, January 20 (2017).

While in D.C. the students also get the opportunity to go on a tour of the White House, check out the various Smithsonian Museums, Mt. Vernon, go to Fords Theater, to see where President Lincoln was assassinated, and even take a scenic Inaugural Moonlight Dinner Cruise on Friday night.

The students also have a tour of Arlington National Cemetery planned. Originally they were going to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but they got bumped by two dignitaries. Only to find out later, those two dignitaries are actually Donald Trump and Mike Pence. Yep, they got Trump bumped! It's still going to be a very cool experience for the kids, since our new president, and vice president will actually be at Arlington the same time they are too.

Can you say selfie opportunity?

I have to admit I'm a little jealous of this experience. Not only is my sister behind this whole excursion, she's also taking her husband Rick, and my wife Patti on the trip. How did I get left out? D'oh! I knew I should have been nicer to her growing up.

Harrisburg middle students can count on many more of these cross-country history field trips in the future according to school officials.  But I gotta believe it's going to be tough to top this one!
