Mike McCarthy's vacation away from the NFL has come to an end. The former Green Bay Packers coach will take over the reins in Dallas.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports that the Dallas Cowboys have hired McCarthy. An official announcement and press conference will come at a later time according to Glazer.

McCarthy brings a veteran presence and proven playoff success to Dallas. He was with the Packers from 2006-2018 and helped lead Green Bay to a Super Bowl during the 2010 season. Green Bay made the playoffs nine times during McCarthy's tenure with the team. Following his departure in Green Bay, McCarthy decided to take off the 2019 NFL season.

NFL.com reports that former Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was the only other candidate outside of McCarthy to be considered for the Cowboys job.

McCarthy replaces Jason Garrett as head coach. During his nine full years in Dallas, Garrett brought the Cowboys to the playoffs three times and his team never advanced past the divisional round.
