One of the best things about living in a golden age of horror films is that incredible movies can come from the most unexpected of places. Any studio (large or small), any talented filmmaker or performer can suddenly drop one of the best horror movies of the year; that was certainly the case with Creep, Mark Duplass’ 2015 twist on the found footage subgenre of horror films. Duplass, who was already well-regarded as a talented no-budget filmmaker, created a memorable horror icon for next to nothing, and fans have been anxiously awaiting the sequel since it was first announced.

And if this first trailer (via /Film) is any indication, it would seem that Duplass and director Patrick Brice haven’t rested on their laurels with Creep 2, playing with the conventions of their first movie. While Duplass’ Josef appears to be up to his same old tricks, there’s also a level of meta-commentary about diminishing returns that could speak well to the horror genre, not to mention an adventurous bit of tinkering with the format from the original. Will the presence of Desiree Akhavan as the new videographer also allow them to toy with the conventions of the final girl and the revenge film? You better believe it.

Here’s the full synopsis for Creep 2:

Sara is a video artist whose primary focus is creating intimacy with lonely men. After finding an ad online for ‘video work’ she thinks she may have found the subject of her dreams. She drives to a remote house in the forest and meets a man claiming to be a serial killer. Unable to resist the chance to create a truly shocking piece of art, she agrees to spend the day with him. However, as the day goes on she discovers she may have dug herself into a hole she can’t escape.

The film will be available for streaming on October 24.
