What always makes the holiday season so special is all the different ways a person can open up their heart and give to people and organizations in need of acts of kindness.

This spirit of giving was on full display recently here in the Sioux Falls area as one anonymous donor gave a rare $50.00 American Buffalo Gold Coin, valued at roughly $3,000 to the Sioux Empire United Way Coins for Kids Fundraiser.

Pigeon 605 reports, that this particular donation will benefit the fundraising program dedicated to supporting the Sioux Empire United Way's Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children from birth to age 5.

The Coins for Kids Fundraiser program first got underway back in 1997, and according to Pigeon 605, the program takes place on an annual basis in the Sioux Falls, Tea, and Harrisburg School Districts.

Throughout the year students are encouraged to collect spare change while learning about philanthropy and the importance of supporting those in need in the communities they live in.

Pigeon 605 reports, that last year alone the Coins for Kids Fundraiser program raised over $29,000 which equated to a whopping 13,419 books.

First National Bank in Sioux Falls also plays a pivotal role in the success of this very important initiative. Each year they are tasked with sorting and counting all the thousands of coins collected by the schools. This program would not be possible without their help and support.

In the end, age-appropriate books are provided to registered children each month at no cost to their families, which in turn helps lay the foundation for academic success.
