Badlands National Park is a dramatic landscape to be sure. Jagged rock formations, steep canyons, and rolling prairies. Sculpted by millions of years of erosion, the Badlands expose an ancient inland sea and the fossils of animals that roamed the region millions of years ago.

But if what you're looking for is a place to roam in winter solitude, the Badlands have that for you too. Thrillist, the travel website, has chosen Badlands National Park as one of the Best National Parks to visit in the winter.

The park's rugged beauty with steep buttes, pinnacles, and spires towering above the surrounding prairie, creates a unique and otherworldly landscape.  Erosion continues to shape the Badlands today, with the rock formations constantly changing.

In addition to its dramatic geology, the Badlands is home to a variety of plant and animal life, including bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and more. The park also has a rich human history, with evidence of human life dating back over 11,000 years.

Today, Badlands National Park attracts around a million visitors each year to experience its stunning natural beauty and explore its unique geological wonders. Most of those visitors stop by the park during the summer months, so you may just have the place to yourself in the winter.

Thrillist suggests finding a place to stay, perhaps in nearby Wall, and venturing into the park from there.
