Food Network Magazine recently traveled the country, compiling a list of "Best Slices of Pizza" by state. And the winner for South Dakota was the spicy meatball and sauerkraut at Charlie's Pizza House in Yankton.

A man by the name of Charlie Chato opened the pizzeria in 1959. But soon after, gave up on his idea and moved back to his hometown of Chicago. However, the eatery lived on and has become one of the longest running pizzerias in South Dakota.

Over time, the spicy meatball with sauerkraut has become a local favorite. Fans of the restaurant say newcomers are typically wary of the pizza - until they try it. Should you decide to take the challenge, the address is 804 Summit Street, Yankton.

The winners in our neighboring states:

  • Iowa - the Crab Rangoon from Fong's Pizza in Des Moines
  • Minnesota - the #7 (Oyster and Mushroom) from Black Sheep Pizza in Minneapolis and St. Paul
  • Nebraska - the Classic Hamburger from La Casa Pizzeria in Omaha
  • North Dakota - the House Special from A&B Pizza in Bismark and Mandan
