New Initiative Brings 988 Crisis Hotline To Sioux Falls Patrol Vehicles
If you notice Sioux Falls police cruisers sporting bright 988 magnetic ribbons this September, it’s more than just a visual change; it’s a powerful message of hope.
The Sioux Falls Police Department has partnered with the Sioux Falls Area Suicide Prevention Task Force to bring attention to Suicide Prevention Month in a way that’s hard to miss: by displaying magnetic ribbons on marked patrol vehicles featuring the number 988, the national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Dakota News Now reports that several Sioux Falls law enforcement vehicles will display the magnetic 988 ribbons this September to help draw attention to Suicide Prevention Month.

Sioux Falls isn't the only city participating in the suicide prevention initiative; at least 500 marked patrol vehicles throughout South Dakota will display these ribbons on their cars throughout the month.
Here's a heartbreaking statistic South Dakota surely doesn't want to tout:
According to a study conducted in 2023, the Rushmore State had the 9th-highest suicide death rate in the country. And the issue isn't going away.
Sergeant Tarah Walton of the Sioux Falls Police Department told Dakota News Now, “In the time that I’ve been here, 20 years now, I have seen a steady increase in the calls related to mental health. I would estimate that we are dealing with approximately six to ten of those calls a day.”
An alarming number to be sure.
Data shows that young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 are particularly vulnerable to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. By placing 988 magnets on squad cars, officers hope to not only raise awareness but also remind the public that help is just three digits away.
Walton told Dakota News Now, “I hope when people see them, they realize that law enforcement is on their side, we want to help people and they can reach out to us if they’re really struggling, but also on the ribbons, 988 is on there, and so it’s a good reminder that there’s help outside of law enforcement too and we’re supportive of that.”
