Rally Tally: Accidents Are down so Far during 2024 Sturgis Rally
The 2024 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has been underway for a few days now, and so far it appears most of this year's attendees have been on their best behavior.
The latest rally tally shows that misdemeanor and felony drug arrests are up a little compared to the 2023 numbers, but the good news is that the number of accidents so far is down.
While the total number of rally-related accidents is down, Dakota New Now is reporting that the Sturgis Rally did experience its first two fatalities of the 2024 season on Monday, (August 5).
According to Dakota News Now, Sturgis Rally Data as of Tuesday, (August 6) from the South Dakota Highway Patrol shows there have been a total of 69 DUI arrests to date, that's down from 71 at this time last year. There have been 15 more Misdemeanor Drug Arrests in 2024 compared to 2023. Felony Drug Arrests are also up, with 75 cases this year, compared to 68 in 2023.
There has also been a rather stark drop-off in the total number of citations handed out so far during this year's rally. Only 646 tickets have been issued thus far, compared to 793 in 2023.
And the total number of warnings issued is way down as well, along with the number of injury accidents, which is another bit of encouraging news.
As the rally rolls on, authorities continue to remind motorcyclists of the importance of always wearing a helmet when riding.
The 2024 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally wraps up on Sunday, (August 11).
