I'm guessing there were very few people here in the Sioux Empire who were motivated to do any yard work, or home cleanup over the long Labor Day weekend, given it felt like the surface of the sun outside all three days.

But, you know South Dakota, the temperatures will change soon enough, and when they do, fall will begin to show its colors, meaning plenty of yard work will soon be on the way.

Yep, before you know it, you'll be up to your you know what in piles of leaves and the Sioux Falls Sanitary Landfill will be one hoppin' place.

With fall cleanup season right around the corner, the city of Sioux Falls is once again reminding its residents that everyone gets one free landfill pass for the year, and you have until December 31st to use it.

Dakota News Now reports that free landfill passes used to be mailed out to residents, but, that has changed. Now they are attached to your driver's license or state ID.

Each time you drop off a load, the landfill staff on site will scan your driver's license or state ID to see if you've redeemed your free trip.

Don Kuper, Sioux Falls Landfill Superintendent told Dakota News Now, "With the former pass system, we would get a significant influx of residents to the Landfill every September so they could use their pass before it expired. One of the primary changes we made to the program, outside of it going paperless, was the transition to the passes being redeemable throughout the year. Switching to a calendar year is more convenient for everyone.”

Each household in Sioux Falls is allowed to drop off one free load to the city landfill each year.

All items that are dropped off must be tarped or tied down. No exceptions.

Remember, in addition to yard waste, the Sioux Falls landfill WILL ACCEPT things like construction and demolition debris, furniture, appliances, mattresses, and old tires that contain no rims and are not larger than 20 inches.

They WILL NOT accept hazardous waste and electronics, or Ash Tree wood, logs, and branches.

The Sioux Falls landfill is open every Monday through Saturday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The landfill is closed to the public on Sundays.
