The world's only Corn Palace just a mere hour away from Sioux Falls is about to get a bunch of new artwork just in time for the new year.

Dakota News Now reports that a new crop of murals is in the works for the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota.

It's been two years since the Corn Palace received a set of new murals on the exterior of this iconic South Dakota structure. The current artwork is beginning to look a little old and weathered after being up for an extra year.

Doug Greenway, director of the Corn Palace told Dakota News Now, “We’re excited for our 2024 theme, famous South Dakotans. South Dakotans have certainly been on the Corn Palace before, and famous people have been on the Corn Palace, but we’ve never had the theme of famous South Dakotans. We’ve got a great variety of arts and entertainment and culture.”

According to Dakota News Now, a couple of murals featuring famous South Dakotans are already done. NBA legend Mike Miller and Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills. The work is nearly complete on “The Price Is Right” host Bob Barker, leaving just six more famous South Dakotan murals to go.

The Corn Palace hopes this new crop of artwork will help draw the biggest tourist crowds the famous South Dakota landmark has seen to date.

Students from Dakota Wesleyan University have been tasked with designing the new artwork for the murals as part of a class. And they're already starting to plan the new artwork for next year later this month.

So who's gonna be on the murals of the remaining six famous South Dakotans?

When it's completed, visitors can expect to see, famous South Dakota artist, Oscar Howe, WNBA player/coach, Becky Hammon, space shuttle astronaut, Charles Gemar, legendary South Dakota sheriff, Wild Bill Hickok, WWII ace pilot and former South Dakota governor Joe Foss, and half pint herself, Laura Ingalls Wilder, famous South Dakota writer.
